A question the the (ahem) agony aunt of a leading UK newspaper has become one of their most read stories of the week. For context, The Guardian is the UK's main left-leaning broadsheet. Some of its journalism is excellent - it recently exposed the Cambridge Analytica/Facebook scandal - but it's also rightly notorious for a certain brand of 'should I feel guilty about culturally appropriating my quinoa?' woke middle-class navel-gazing.

In that context, the discussion 'below the line' makes for quite interesting reading. It's largely divided between 2 positions: sympathy for the writer's discomfort, and a frustration that he has no appreciation of how damn lucky he is. I can guess which will register with most people here! But there's something in the other position that I can relate to. For some of us raised to respect women as equals and to abhor domestic violence, it can take a bit to reconcile the competing instincts generated by the prospect of spanking a partner. Strong arousal competes with a degree of guilt and moral squeamishness. Personally, I got over that long ago, but I have some empathy/sympathy for a young guy finding himself in that dilemma.
